Did you make:
one hole through the folded sheet?
Or:
two holes, one in each layer?
Both descriptions can make sense depending on what you are counting.
That same ambiguity is at the heart of the shirt puzzle.
The Layer Problem
A shirt isn’t a flat sheet of paper.
It is a three-dimensional garment.
It has a front and a back.
If a tear passes through the front and back panels, you may see an opening from the front and another opening from the back.
Some people count those as two holes.
Others count the entire passage through the garment as one hole.
The difference comes from the definition being used.
This is why declaring that there is only one “correct” answer without explaining the counting method can be misleading.
Think of the Shirt as a Container
One useful way to approach the puzzle is to imagine the shirt as a hollow object.
A normal shirt already has openings.
The neck is an opening into the inside.

A common mistake is to count only what appears on the front.
Imagine seeing two large tears near the torso.
You might count:
4 normal openings + 2 tears = 6.
But what if those tears pass through the back?
Now the number could be higher depending on the rules.
This is why you should mentally rotate the object.
Ask:
What does the back look like?
Does the opening continue through the other side?
Is there another visible opening?
Does the tear connect with an existing opening?
These questions can change the result.
A Simple Counting Method
If you encounter a puzzle like this, don’t immediately guess.
Use a systematic method.
Step One: Count the normal openings
Start with:
- Neck
- Left sleeve
- Right sleeve
- Bottom
That’s four.
